Reigning champions of the Reserve League, Ross County begun their title defence with a defeat in a tight game against Fochabers. Batting first Ross County got off to a slow start and with the score on 2 lost their first wicket, R. Richard ct off the bowling of N. Dickson. This bought Captain L. Boyd to the crease and together with R. Rae he begin to build the innings. Having moved the score along to 73 Boyd was out caught for 35. Rae followed soon after also caught having scored 26. H. Tolliday Snr scored a quick 7 before he fell to the bowling of C. Sander to leave the score on 88 for 4. The next partnership proved a highly effective one for county with club stalwart R. Belli and J. Blake, having only taken up cricket a few months ago, pilling in on the runs. Belli finished on 43 not out while Blake scored 46 not out including a spectacular 6 off the last ball that elder brother Chris, first team captain, would have been proud off. This helped Ross County’s final score onto 171 for 4 from their 40 overs.
Having posted a very competitive score it was shaping up to be a good game when Ross County took to the field. It was a mix of youth and experience that opened the bowling in the form of A. Lamb and J. Sangster. Sangster bowled an econical 4 overs for 16 runs to give County a good start while at the other end Lamb picked up the wicket of Cole for 6. Boyd bought himself into the attack along with young spinner Monahan who picked up the wickets of Elvine and Priddle. Tolliday Snr then bowled a brilliant spell where he picked up 4 wicket for just 22 runs from his 8 overs. Supported by Belli at the other end who was unlucky not to pick up a wicket. Monahan, Boyd and then Lamb were bought back into the attack but none could the break the partnership of N. Dickson (50*) and I. Stockwell (14*) who guided their team home to a 3 wicket victory.
