Ross County Cricket Club v Arbroath Cricket Club U15 match played at Castle Leod 10/6/07 in U15 National Championship. Match sponsored by CKD Galbraith LLP, Macandrew & Jenkins, Saffery Champness & John Maclean & Sons Electrical (Dingwall) Ltd.
On Sunday Ross County hosted the visit of Arbroath CC, the Club that dumped their U13s out of the Cup the previous week at Montrose. The haar and overcast conditions made the grass very wet and the team fielding first would have to be on their toes if they were to keep the run rate down in the conditions.
Ross County were to field first and watched as the Amin brothers opened the bowling. The first few overs were quick and lively but the slippery ball made life difficult for Andrew Ferguson behind the stumps. After the first four overs Arbroath were accelerating to 30 runs and skipper, Harry Tolliday, decided to change the pace of his attack and introduced himself and Alistair Langston to replace Rijvan and Farhan Amin. Immediately the slower pace made the batsmen think and have to force their shots away. This deceived Plomer into playing an uppish shot well caught by Adrian Neill for 8. Bowick came and joined Carnegie who had lead the challenge only to see him bowled by Langston for a solid 18.
The Arbroath rush slowed and the fielding team took the upper hand. Elliott joined Bowick but they struggled to penetrate the field. In his second over Tolliday struck again as Langston took a superb diving catch to dismiss Bowick for 2. Small came in at number 5 and immediately hit a 4. Soon after he too fell to Tolliday when Neill caught him at point for 5. Four wickets had fallen for 9 runs and the early momentum for Arbroath was lost.
Burnett came out at 6 and steadied the ship. He saw the bowling partnership change as the younger pairing of Rory Asher and Adrian Neill came on. Both bowled tidily and Arbroath added to their total through a spate of over exuberant fielding shies at the stumps, which twice saw 5 runs being added to the score. Langston finally broke the partnership as he threw down the stumps before Elliott could make his ground, 49 for 5. Johnston was next in but he didn’t trouble the scorers as he was run out by a throw from the deep by Robin Nelson, which hit the stumps with the batsmen chancing their luck on a third run. Teviotdale and Burnett were to see out the remaining overs clipping Tanatswa Mususa and then the main bowlers as they returned to the attack for another 35 runs. Arbroath finished on 93 for 6, a creditable score in the wet conditions and poor light.
Tolliday had been the pick of the Ross bowlers finishing with 3 for 13 off his 4 overs and Langston with 1 for 18 off 3 overs.
Rijvan and Farhan Amin opened the batting for Ross County and despite the instructions to take their time clearly had an appointment elsewhere to attend as they reached 30 runs in four overs before Farhan top edged a skier to Dalgleish to be caught for 11. Thomas Wright came in at three and soon joined Rijvan in taking on the bowlers. In improving weather conditions the batsmen played their shots and dominated the bowling. Wright finished on a solid 25 not out and an excellent big hitting performance by Rijvan Amin saw him finish on 51 not out, with a mighty 6 winning the match, and Ross County home as comfortable winners on 97 for 1 off 11.3 of the possible 20 overs. The opponents in next week’s round, the Scottish quarterfinals, are thought to be Strathearn from Perth-shire. The team is grateful to the main sponsors and to Media Promotion Production Management Ltd, of Strathpeffer who again provided the teas.
